Little Brown Bat

Little Brown Bat

I saw this bat on a walk in a park last spring and almost missed it – it was hanging near the bottom of an ash tree, just snoozing away.

I had forgotten how furry bats really are – it’s easy to forget they’re mammals sometimes, and how incredibly fascinating they are. For example, the muscles in their feet work opposite the muscles in our hands – when our hands are relaxed the fingers are open, or fall away from the palm. But the feet of bats are relaxed when closed; they have to make a conscious effort to open them – which is how they stay hanging while asleep.
