Beaver Dams & Lodges



We took a walk at a local nature sanctuary (in north-central MA) yesterday and were amazed at the amount of fresh beaver activity along the river:

This tree has had the bark stripped off by our local beavers. They feed on the cambium (inner layer off bark).

Beaver lodges are marvels of animal engineering. The lodge has a dry level above the water line with holes in the floor for underwater access

Beaver have started the process of felling this tree. The fresh bark chips were evidence of very recent activity – probably within the past 24 hours.
