13 Truths about Living with Livestock

For Thursday 13, I thought I’d share some of my learning experiences in the few weeks since we’ve gotten our chickens (as a horse person, I know much of this is true for other animals as well). I know many people have different views on the birds they raise; some treat them as pets, some keep a few only for laying eggs, and others (i.e., us) see them as livestock. Don’t get me wrong – we love our chickens. But ultimately we’re raising them for their eggs and meat, not because they’re sweet, cute and funny (which they are, of course).

1. Your whole world – house, yard, garden, patio – gets infinitely messier with animals roaming around.

2. Leaving town is more complicated (and expensive, if you need professional help while away).

3. There are few things funnier than a running chicken.

4. The smells from your barn/coop/shed are far more appealing than other people’s.

5. Adjusting to the crowing of roosters was far easier than expected (actually, I love listening to our roosters).

6. Cleaning out livestock housing is incredibly rewarding.

7. High prey-drive German Shepherds and livestock of any kind don’t mix well.

8. Listening to birds contentedly cluck, chirp and mutter amongst themselves is therapeutic.

9. Farm (or yard) raised eggs are far, far superior to anything you can get in the supermarket.

10. Having roosters with your flock provides your hens with protection and gives owners the ability to raise their own chicks.

11. Raising livestock is a great way to teach children about responsibility and animal ethics.

12. The satisfaction you get from raising your own food and animals can’t be beat.

13. Kids LOVE chickens!!
