Trick-or-Treating as an Adult

Because of Hurricane Sandy, trick-or-treating in towns around us got postponed until this past Saturday. A friend of ours invited us to her house for a pizza dinner and trick-or-treating in her neighborhood (we live on a very busy road with no sidewalk, so trick-or-treating in our ‘neighborhood’ is out of the question), which we were delighted to take her up on. And as you can see from the above picture, Karen really gets into Halloween, so hanging out at her house was way fun. Once we had actually set out, I realized that I haven’t gone trick-or-treating with either of my kids (bad parent confession)…ever.

We didn’t start taking our Oldest out until he was at least 4, and I really don’t remember why that year I didn’t get to join him and my husband. The following year I was very pregnant with our Youngest, and while I went to a friend’s house for Oldest to join some other kids trick-or-treating in their neighborhood, I didn’t actually go out with them.  I was completely exhausted, and stayed at their house watching Night of the Living Dead.

Two years ago our Youngest was really not up for the trip, and staying home with him made the most sense (I was still breastfeeding). And last year Youngest was ill, so I stayed home again.  So this year, I finally got to go trick-or-treating for the first time since I was 13.  Wow.

I have to admit, getting to go trick-or-treating again is definitely a perk of having kids (if you love Halloween as much as I do, anyway). There’s no telling how many more years we’ll get to join him before our Oldest decides he wants to go out with friends on his own.

If you’re a parent, do you/have you enjoyed going out trick-or-treating with your kids?  I can imagine that parents who don’t really feel one way or the other about Halloween might find it a chore.  For me, I’m really glad I got to go this year.

  1. Well, you know my story this year. But, normally I do enjoy going out trick-or-treating with the kids. Unless it’s really cold. Last year, we had snow on the ground!

Oh, and go Bruins! (hopefully we’ll get to see them play this year)

    1. And you totally deserved a night out! Like you said, the kids had a great time, and so did you! Yeah, my poor Oldest child. His birthday is on Halloween, and between the snowstorm last year and the hurricane this year, he’s totally exasperated!

Actually, none of us are much into hockey… Oldest has 4 teeth missing and thought being a hockey player would be a good fit with his smile. 🙂 Had to borrow the equipment!
