Windows on Wildlife: Deceased Spruce Grouse

Welcome to the 8th edition of Windows on Wildlife (wow – two months!)! If you have a recent post about wildlife you’d like to share – it can be anything: birds, insects, mammals – scroll down to the end of the post and add your site; a compilation of all additions will be posted the following week. Please don’t forget to link back here (I’d love it if you’d add the Windows on Wildlife button on the sidebar to your post) and visit other blogs that have articles to share. Thanks for stopping by!

Ok, I know I said I wasn’t going to share pictures of the deceased parrot spruce grouse we found in the Catskills, but I couldn’t help myself. And since I still have lingering doubts about its identification, decided it couldn’t hurt to put it out there (after all, I post pictures of scat, don’t I? Can this really be any worse?). Perhaps someone can help affirm (or deny) my identification.

This was the most, ah, dignified photo we had:

If you didn’t catch it, see my full post on our encounter with the spruce grouse here.

Please pardon the awful pun, but I’m killing two birds with one stone and linking up this week’s Windows with Wildlife to Michelle’s awesome Nature Notes meme.

=======================================================================

Last week, Jenny at Just Photos by Me, shared some cool pics of macroinvertebrates and other pond critters found in her part of the UK during a school field trip (including a beautiful damselfly!). Fergiemoto at Creativity Aroused took some really stunning pics of a battle between two different hummingbird species – you’ve really got to check these out!  If you have a post/photo of wildlife (alive or otherwise…) that you’d like to share, link up with us below!

    1. I saw your post – so glad you’re joining us this week! And that I got you to look more closely at some ants… 🙂 They’re fascinating.

      I had a brain freeze last night around 10 PM and thought “Oh no, I missed the start deadline for WoW!’ So I hastily wrote a post and published it. This morning I couldn’t figure out why the Inlinkz thingy wasn’t working, until I realized that last night was Sunday, not Monday. Duh. So the link-up will start at 8 PM tonight. Sorry for the confusion!

  1. Oh I read that other post..poor thing..I am not good with dead things although since moving here I try to take the opportunity to learn from them….poor thing…Michelle

    1. Yeah, we were sad to see it on the porch. Made me wonder how fast it was going to have broken its neck going through the screen.

  2. I’ve just stumbled upon your meme and I’m delighted to join in with it this week. Over here in my corner of Australia I’m very fortunate to see lots of wildlife almost every day.

    Sorry I’m unable to help with an I.D. of the Grouse, but that’s one creature I don’t see here.

    1. So glad you’re joining us! You have some amazing photos on your blog – its so much fun to see wildlife from other parts of the globe, and learn about them from someone who sees them firsthand. Welcome!
