Time Off in the Catskills

Things have been busier than usual the last two weeks, as I’m working on wrapping up at my full-time job while still doing said job along with trying to bring things together for my new work-life next month. With all that, I haven’t had a spare minute to get to other high-priority items. Like, oh, cleaning my house, blogging, working on my book. And just because things weren’t crazy enough, we took a long weekend away for my birthday (Friday the 13th) this past weekend.

I fully intend to report on some of my finds and adventures in the mountains, but don’t quite have the time I need today. So I’ll share this little bit…

Walking is my second-favorite form of intentional exercise (swimming being my first), particularly on small, country roads. And my absolute favorite road to walk down is Spruceton Rd., in West Kill, NY where my family’s cabin is.  Also listed as County Rt. 6, it meanders through a valley in the high peaks region of the Catskills, eventually dead-ending into the forest.

I spent at least 3 hours this long weekend just walking along this road, soaking in the mountain view, listening to the gurgling of a mountain stream which wends along roughly the same path as the road (which is why the road is there, I would assume), thinking idle thoughts and enjoying the simple task of moving my body.

Pictures just don’t do this place justice, but here’s one shot that sort of comes close:

  1. A belated Happy Happy Birthday!!! How nice that you could get away. The house can wait.. I used to love to swim as there was always a pond or lake at the cabin to swim in. When I got swimming in school, they told me I didn’t know how to swim properly. It took the fun out of it getting yelled at all the time….where did that come from? I am glad that you got away and could relax….Michelle

    1. Thanks Michelle! I’ve been a competitive swimmer for many, many years (although took a few years off and am just working on getting back in shape now). I was fortunate enough to take to it early and easily, and never resented swimming lessons. But I know exactly what you mean about being taught how to do something ‘properly’ taking the fun out of it!
